For most of the last decade an optical module was the line item nobody worried about. You picked a reach, picked a coding, and it arrived. That assumption has quietly stopped holding, and it catches out project managers who have not bought optics in a year or two.
The first is that AI fabric build-outs consume optics in quantities that no enterprise network ever did. A single large cluster can absorb more modules than a mid-sized bank's entire estate. When one of those orders lands, it moves the queue for everybody else.
The second is the shift to higher speeds. Manufacturing capacity that used to produce 100G parts has been redirected toward 400G and 800G, and the older lines are not simply idling in reserve.
The third is coding. A module coded for one switch vendor is not interchangeable with the same optical part coded for another. Fragmenting demand across codings means that being out of stock on the exact variant you need is much more likely than the aggregate numbers suggest.
None of this is exotic advice. It is simply that optics now deserve the same planning attention that switches and servers have always received.
