Three days of meetings in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, and a clearer picture of why hardware buyers there route through Dubai.

We joined a Dubai Chamber delegation to Kenya and Tanzania in March, alongside twenty-odd other trading businesses. Most of our meetings were with system integrators serving banks, telecoms operators and university networks.

The recurring theme was predictability

Nobody we met was primarily shopping on unit price. What came up in almost every conversation was the gap between a quoted lead time and an actual arrival, and the cost of that gap when a project has a contractual go-live date attached to it.

Routing through Dubai works for these buyers for an unglamorous reason: the stock is already on this side of the world, the flight is short, and the paperwork is familiar. A part that ships from a Gulf warehouse on Monday is often in Nairobi before a part ordered the same day from Europe has cleared its origin airport.

Where we are adjusting

Two changes came directly out of the trip. We now quote in a way that separates the stocked portion of an order from the indent portion, so a buyer can take partial delivery immediately rather than waiting for the slowest line. And we have started holding a deeper buffer of 10G and 25G optics, which turned out to be the single most frequently urgent item.
