Independent distributors fill real gaps in the supply chain. Here is how to tell a good one from a broker with a website.
Independent distribution exists because authorised channels are optimised for steady, forecast demand. When you need forty of something today, or a part that went end of sale last year, or a mixed order across six manufacturers on one invoice, the independent market is where you end up.
It is also a market with a wide quality range, and the difference is not visible on a website. These are the questions worth asking.
Be careful with quotes that are dramatically below the market without an explanation, suppliers who will not state a physical address, and anyone who describes refurbished stock using words that avoid the term. Also be wary of claimed authorisations. Many independent distributors, ourselves included, are not authorised resellers for every brand they carry, and an honest supplier will say so directly.
None of this makes independent distribution risky. It makes it a market where asking six plain questions gets you most of the way to a good decision.
