Buying refurbished Gen5 platforms without inheriting a problem

Second-hand server platforms can be excellent value. A short inspection list removes most of the risk.

Second-hand server platforms can be excellent value. A short inspection list removes most of the risk.

The refurbished market for recent server platforms has become considerably more active as large operators cycle hardware faster than they used to. The hardware is often barely used. The risk is rarely the metal, and almost always the configuration, the licensing and the history.

Before you buy

  • Ask for the service tag or serial and check the warranty status yourself on the manufacturer's site
  • Confirm the management controller licence tier, since an entry-level licence removes remote console access
  • Check whether the chassis is the configurable variant or a fixed build, because backplanes are rarely worth changing later
  • Ask what firmware level it will ship at and whether updates still require an active support contract
  • Request photographs of the actual unit, not the model

On arrival

Power it on before it goes anywhere near a rack. Check that the fan count matches the configuration, that all DIMM slots are recognised, and that the event log has been cleared but not suspiciously reset moments before shipping. Twenty minutes on a bench prevents most of the problems that otherwise surface during a maintenance window.
